Tip of the Month from FIT4MOM, which provides fitness and exercise programs to help moms make strides in fitness, motherhood, and life.
We all want it – a cuter backside. But did you know that having a strong booty is an important part of having a strong core? Strong glutes provide a foundation to help support your whole lower body. Your backside is made up of 3 muscles: your gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and gluteus minimus. As the largest muscle group in your body, your glutes are integral to powering your body and are responsible for actions like jumping, running, getting up out of a chair, and power most athletic activities.
Farel Hruska, FIT4MOM’s National Fitness Director, says “the stronger your gluteus maximus muscles are the better supported your low back is because it doesn’t have to engage as much to compensate. This a HUGE benefit!” Strong glutes help keep your body properly aligned which work to protect your joints. Building a better backside will help you look, AND FEEL better!
Here are a couple of Farel’s favorite exercises to work your booty!
- Walking Lunge with Hip Extension: Step into a lunge and as you come up out of it, extend your leg back behind you as you squeeze your glutes. Repeat on the other side.
- Squat with a Lift: Lower into your squat with weight in your heels and knees lined up over the ankles. As you come up out of the squat lift one of your legs to the side and return back into the squat. Repeat on the other side.
