West Seattle PEPS Group Helping Out

When a PEPS Group in West Seattle heard about a house fire, and a mom expecting her baby, they jumped right in to help.

This West Seattle PEPS Group started in December. The group of 8 are all new parents themselves.

“I had read a post on our local West Seattle Moms Facebook page about a house fire which caused a local expectant mom to lose everything,” said volunteer group leader Kate Hoyt.

Soon afterwards, another local mom made an appeal to the local community to collect baby items.

Kate said, “Before I had even had time to email the group, one of our members had reached out to share the link,”

Kate offered to deliver any donated items brought to their next PEPS meeting.

“The moms certainly came up trumps,” Kate said.

This newborn PEPS group was filled with many first time parents with young babies, under 8 weeks old. So they had many brand new baby items which they had not been able to use and were delighted to donate.

There were swaddles, books, diapers, toys, equipment and lots of clothes.

“At the end of the meeting, I had a trunk full of bags to deliver! My son and I delivered the donations to the coordinator later that afternoon.” Turns out, the coordinator was a PEPS mom herself, and recently had her second baby.

She was extremely grateful and passed on the receiving mother’s thanks. In fact, there had been an outpouring from the whole community. Her garage was full!

Kate said she was humbled by the immediate and heartfelt empathy these new moms showed for a neighboring mom in need.

“Becoming a new mom under the best of circumstances is challenging enough, so when you hear about someone experiencing a hardship on top of it all, the least you can do is spread the word and help in any way you can,” said Kiki, a mom in Kate’s group.

Kate, a first time PEPS Group Leader, said in closing, “Although I had only known these amazing women a matter of weeks they made me very proud and privileged to be their group leader.”
